Happy Birthday to
Close Your Eyes (Sweet Dreams, Good Night)

I wrote the lyrics on my birthday in 1985. That seems like another lifetime ago, but in some ways it seems like just yesterday. John Schwab wrote the melody a few years later and recorded the song for his 1990 solo album, "Crack of Dawn."

Close Your Eyes (Sweet Dreams, Good Night)

A single light bulb shinin' naked in the night
Shadows on the wall dancin' crazy in the light
A broken-down dresser, a broken-down bed
Three empty wine bottles and an achin' head

A picture of a lady hangin' on the wall
With a broken frame from a nasty fall
Stumble into bed, turn out the light
Close your eyes, sweet dreams, good night

You wander downtown to pass another day
People look at you, then they turn and look away
’Cause it's as plain as the pain that's written on your face
You're in a different time, you're in a different place

You're with the lady in the picture hangin' on the wall
With a broken frame from a nasty fall
Stumble into bed, turn out the light
Close your eyes, sweet dreams, good night

You remember a time when you had so much more
You try to forget but that's what memories are for
As the setting sun closes another day
You've never in your life ever felt so far away

From the lady in the picture hangin' on the wall
With a broken frame from a nasty fall
Stumble into bed, turn out the light
Close your eyes, sweet dreams, good night
Close your eyes, sweet dreams, good night
